Keeping House in Seventeenth-Century England with Margarette Lincoln
June 1 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pmFree
This talk, focusing largely on Mary Evelyn, wife of the famous diarist John, will look at the management of genteel households in Stuart England. What was expected of a competent housewife in terms of cooking skills, knowledge of home remedies, and the management of servants? The growth in luxury imports brought practical comforts to the home but domestic perils remained – in cosmetics, medicines, and hygiene measures. Finally, this talk will explore the frustrations that an intelligent, educated woman might encounter within the conventional role of housewife.
