Celebrate 100 years of women’s voting rights!
Join a tribute to Women’s Equality Day on Independence Mall with inspiring speakers, music and a salute to the suffragists.
August 26, the day the 19th Amendment became law in 1920, is recognized nationwide as Women’s Equality Day. To celebrate the centennial, Vision 2020 will host a major public gathering on Independence Mall in honor of the suffragists whose tenacious efforts resulted in voting rights for American women.
Each year, Vision 2020 has encouraged sister events across the country on the same day by offering potential hosts a Toast To Tenacity Toolkit. On August 26, 2020, numerous simultaneous Toast To Tenacity events will be held and anyone who can’t attend one in person can participate through social media by using the hashtag #ToastToTenacity.
Everyone will toast the suffragists at 1pm Eastern time, either raising a glass of grape juice – as the suffragists did during Prohibition – or any beverage of their choice.
The 2020 celebration in Philadelphia will include a ceremonial ringing of the Justice Bell. A replica of the Liberty Bell but without the crack, the Justice Bell was created in 1915 to raise public awareness about women’s fight for voting rights. After a five-year journey around Pennsylvania and neighboring states, the bell finally rang for the first time when women won the right to vote in 1920.
